ZOO Prague, hippopotamus pavilion reconstruction

This reconstruction is focused on treatment of the pool water so as to be able to view the hippopotami when they’re submerged in the pool, (i.e. most of the time…)

The hippo pavilion was commissioned in 2012, but as the pool water is permanently murky, the animals are not visible while swimming. And as is well known, hippopotami spend most of their life in the water due to their large weight. The zoo commissioned us to design a new water treatment system. Our technical solution was prepared in conjunction with Hannover zoo, was delivered in December 2018, and is due to be installed in Summer 2019.

Fish Pass

World-wide, fish passes are constructed to assist the migration of salmon and trout across upstream weirs. They generally include any cascade that serves as a bypass to a weir, as these species are excellent swimmers and jumpers, and migrating upstream they can even jump over small weirs. In European countries the range of migrating fish species is more diverse. Some of them don’t even swim, as such, and just crawl along the bottom of the river instead. Others are weak swimmers and some of them need to have multiple rests when going through a fish ladder.

Additionally, fish pass design and realization in the Czech republic and other European countries must conform with many strict requirements, such as max / min velocity, depth, locations with standing water for fish to rest in, a special track for eels etc., and must also service downstream migration as a fish-friendly bypass.

Pump Storage Power Plants

The world is looking for more ways to store energy, and one of the best is to pump the water up a hill, then whenever you need energy you simply open the turbine. When compared to actual batteries, the initial investment cost is approximately the same, but the lifetime of a battery is 5 000 cycles and then it’s gone. Based on a daily cycle, that equates to a maximum of 13 years for your average battery, while the life expectancy of a pump storage power plant is 50 years or more.

Pump storage power plants can also be combined with, for example, solar plants, meaning that energy generated during the day can be partly stored in pump storage to be used up in the mornings and evenings, during power consumption peaks. Maintenance requires only a minor regular cost (to cover items such as reservoir sealing repairs, technology lubricating etc.). In addition, plants such as this can be used for grid stabilization.

Stream are able to provide all of our listed services for this kind of plant and have already begun working towards one such example in Equador.

Combined power plant solar + batteries + hydro

The development of large capacity batteries and solar panels in the last decade has brought with it excellent opportunities for energy supply optimisation, especially when combining solar power plant, batteries, and either pump storage or river run-off hydropower plants. We have offered our first combined projects to several factories that were having trouble maintaining a permanent energy supply from the national grid, and more should be realized soon. This is also a very appropriate way to operate Island complexes, such as factories, local government buildings etc.
